Our Story

Our Story

Launched in 2015, the Nashville Teacher Residency (NTR) is an independent, state-approved Educator Preparation Provider (EPP) committed to making the teaching profession more accessible, ensuring high-quality preparation, and equipping teachers with the skills and community they need to make an impact on students, schools, and communities. As a non-university-based program, we are able to license teachers directly through the state of Tennessee. From the beginning, our mission has been to prepare excellent teachers through hands-on practice and feedback.

NTR recruits and trains candidates to become high-performing middle and high school math, science, English, history, and special education teachers serving Middle Tennessee’s district and charter schools. We’ve designed two distinct pathways for preparing teachers. Since our founding, the residency model has been our core approach, placing Residents in the classrooms of highly effective Mentor Teachers who model strong practice and gradually release responsibility until the Resident is ready to lead. In 2024, after listening to our school partners, we launched our job-embedded pathway to meet the needs of schools seeking immediate staffing solutions. Both pathways combine real-world experience with rigorous, practical coursework in pedagogy, content, and culture.

But we’re not just trying to fill the teacher pipeline. Our work is rooted in our desire to reimagine what is possible for teacher preparation. We seek to ensure that every graduate of NTR is 1) Well Prepared, 2) Fully Licensed, and 3) Well Cared For. Each of these priorities shapes the way we design programming, partner with schools, and ultimately lead those who enroll in our program.

Our Priorities

Well Prepared

Well Prepared

Every teacher who comes through NTR is equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to serve students well from day one. We prepare educators to create classrooms that are both rigorous and affirming, where students are challenged, known, supported, and pushed to grow.

Fully Licensed

Fully Licensed

We remove barriers to full licensure, giving every candidate a clear, supported path through assessments, coursework, clinical experiences, and state requirements. Talented educators should not be kept out of the profession because licensure is difficult to navigate.

Well Cared For

Well Cared For

We believe caring for educators is part of preparing them well. NTR creates the conditions for teachers to feel supported, connected, and able to sustain the work, so they can keep growing and keep showing up for students.
